Garden Update
Mon 30 June 2025 by Tom Lightfoot
Here are some pictures that I took of the garden on June 30.
For reference, here is a diagram of the main garden, what we call the mid-deck.
Every year, the garden plan is a bit different. This year we have no potatoes, carrots or parsnips because I've finally come to the conclusion that root vegetables don't do well here. A few years ago I came to the same conclusion about squash. This year plays to the garden's strengths in peas, beans and lettuce.
This year's lettuce crop includes the following varieties:
- Butter crunch
- Red salad bowl
- Brentwood - a dark red lettuce
- A pointy reddish lettuce given to me by a neighbour
This year's bean crop includes the following varieties:
- Blue lake pole beans - our main variety
- Amethyst purple bush beans
- Scarlet runners - for the hummingbirds
- A yellow bean given to me by the same neighbour
All of our peas are sugar ann snap peas.
This year the tomatoes are all in pots on the patio. I've got several varieties, all started from seedlings bought from a local grocery store.
Old favorites:
- Juliet
- Grape
- Sungold - orange
- Cherry
- Roma
New to me:
- Black strawberry - purple and red
- Ox heart - big and ugly
- Delicious - biggish
